My Tallow Gentle Blend bars have grown. Every bar is now cut to a full 8 ounces, up from 6, and most weigh in between 8 and 9. Same recipe, same slow process, a third more soap in every bar. Most handmade tallow bars are only 3 to 5 ounces.

Greetings, I'm Little, and this is my Tallow Gentle Blend, unscented and made by hand in small batches.

I call it a gentle blend because the recipe is mostly beef tallow, a traditional, time-tested fat that makes a hard, mild, creamy bar. To round it out, I add a small amount of coconut oil to gently boost the cleansing and a touch of castor oil to improve the conditioning and lather. That is the whole oil blend, nothing fussy and nothing unnecessary.

Instead of store-bought distilled water, I make my own herbal hydrosol. I grow and cut the herbs myself, including rosemary, lavender, mint, lemon balm, peppermint, lemongrass and pineapple sage, and distill them slowly in my own still. The aloe vera is harvested from my own garden as well. This bar has no added fragrance, but those garden botanicals still go into every one, because my goal is to fold as many natural benefits into each bar as I can.

I also add a small amount of citric acid. It helps prevent soap scum in hard water and keeps the bar fresh through its long cure.

I have adjusted this recipe over the years to land on a simple, well-balanced bar that cleanses gently. Everything is mixed slowly, the traditional way, then hand-sliced and beveled so it sits comfortably in your hand. I don't package a bar until it is ordered, which lets it cure as long as possible and makes for a harder, longer-lasting bar.
